| A great last minute find!
My friend was stressed after being on the road all morning driving through Humboldt County attempting to secure a nice campground on a holiday weekend. She'd been pulling her 19' trailer along winding roads and not found what she'd wanted. I was heading north and noticed the freeway sign for rv's. I pulled off and called the site. Gina answered and was a gem! If it wasn't for her I think my weekend could've gone awry too! I inquired if there were two sites available & a quote. The price was higher than what my friend had been quoted by $20-40 a night. They also weren't what either of us wanted. During the call Gina found two sites side by side in the 'back 40'. I told her I'd take them. When I got there, she was as pleasant and welcoming as anyone would want, but especially for two worn out travelers. This site is well maintained. The garbage and recycling bins are kept up. The roads in the park are rough, but the one to get to the site is newly paved and wide. There's 50 amp service, wifi and real good 4G signal. Im only giving 4 stars since the only thing I needed most, showers & restrooms were somewhat functional but outdated. Showers had pretty low pressure, hence taking a shower took longer than normal. I think it was a tad overpriced considering the showers and restrooms need a serious renovation
| Caveat Emptor
A pleasant surrounding but: at $75 (with tax) a night, this campground is not a bargain, in fact, in our opinion, it is way over-priced reaching "rip-off" level. The cabins' roofs have rotting shingles and crops of poison oak are abundant while walking the campground roads. However, we did not see any poison oak in our campsite. The showers were clean but with low water pressure. The bathroom had more than it's share of insects in the windows, sinks and floor. The dumpsters were a walk to get to. There is no TV access without your own satellite dish. Many of the sites and public picnic areas are overgrown from a lack of maintenance. While there is a sign on their brochure for a hiking trail, it has a sign displayed on a chain closing off the trail that says "Keep Out". The road to and from the campground is long and curvy and has many grades we estimate at 8%. These will wreak havoc on an RV's breaks. The sites are not paved, which would be OK but they are also far from level. After staying at over 500 campgrounds throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico, based on a condition/price basis, it is deserving of one star. If it were priced at the rates of comparable campgrounds, we would rate it between 2 - 3 due to the lack of maintenance of their KOA kabins and grounds. The large crops of poison oak definately dropped its rating so be especially aware if you have young children. The owner is definitely a savvy sales person so "Caveat Emptor". We could not in good conscience recommend this campground to a friend. Lastly, be careful when heading North along highway 101. The first "state" camping sign as you head to Cloverdale leads to nowhere. If you see the KOA sign at the Cloverdale exit, do yourself a big favor and keep heading North. After a long day of driving, we turned off and headed to the campground. While we normally would have left when we saw it and heard the price, the drive back to the 101 was so long we just stayed. Another lastly, if you start down the road, there is NO PLACE TO TURN AROUND. Moral of story, don't head down that path period! We hope this saves campers from a similar bad experience.
| Grumpy and inflexible
We travel with a tiny, but self contained trailer. A 13' Boler. Solar and propane provide us with all we need, except drinking water, a toilet and a shower. I had checked out the KOA site which estimated the cost of staying a night on a tent site @35-40. Pricey for our needs, but the pool and hot tub beckoned. When we arrived a man in a golf cart told us that they don't allow trailers on tent sites. The minimum price was a whopping $61 once taxes were added. When I dared to say that this was a lot of money for our needs, and how tiny we were, he got back on his golf cart and rode away. Between the cost and the interaction, we decided to find somewhere else.
