We spent two nights at the Howell Station Recreation Area in May 2018 in our 39’ fifth wheel. We really enjoy COE campgrounds and this was the best we’ve stayed at. The campground is absolutely gorgeous with many mature trees and lush grass. The Des Moines River runs along the campground and there are well-maintained walking trails beside it. The campground is quite big rig friendly. All the sites are back-ins but the road is fairly wide so backing in wasn’t too difficult. Although all the sites have 50 amp electric, there is no water nor sewer connections at the sites due to the many trees. There are large dump stations by the entrance and drinking water is available there. We would definitely return to this campground if in the area.

This is a great spot. Close to Pella and on the river with a nice walking/biking path adjacent. The grounds are well maintained with grass and lots of large shade trees. The sites all have a picnic table and fire ring. Three playgrounds of different sizes. Showers were free, older shower buildings but they were clean. It was $22 when we stayed in June and we still felt this was good value.
