Great Park about 5 miles off the highway. Super quiet and large open sites. So glad we made it here before the gate closed.
This park is a hidden gem. We tried to get into surrounding state parks and they were all full except for this one. The lake has been very low for several years but there is still plenty of swimming and fishing. Fishing is not too good because of the lack of new water going into the lake. The sites are very large but not very level (normal for a state park). Our son had a site next to us and we had to walk a good forty feet to get to his site. There is no sewer or I would have given FIVE stars. Plenty of trees but not so much that satellite would not work. The park rangers are very attentive and extremely friendly. The cabins were very nice and had RV spaces next to them so you can camp with friends who want to use a cabin and you can take your RV and park next to the cabin. There was one trail that will take you from one end of the park to another. Other than that, you have to drive from most camp sites to the dock/fishing/swimming. As with any Texas State Park, you should make a reservation and call ahead if you are going to arrive late to get the combination for the gate. The gate closes promptly at the time specified. My wife and I rarely like going back to the same place but this is one place we will definitely return to. The park is very far from the I20 and is very quiet. We camped there in a Fifth Wheel.
The lake had much more water this year and the fishing was good. You can borrow a rod if you forgot yours and they have some tackle for you. The water that comes out of the spigot is dirty so make sure you have a spare filter. Our filter clogged last year but this year it made it through the entire stay. If you have a reservation and get to the park after closing, you can call the on-call ranger and they will give you the combination to enter the park and then you can self pay after you find a spot. We didn't have cash so we filled out the form and dropped an empty envelope in the self pay box. We settled with the rangers in the morning. The stay is always pleasant here. There has not been a fire restriction (like the rest of Texas) in our two stays here. Bring Plenty of wood for the camp fires. We may try winter camping here later this year. We camped here in a 35' 5er.
Only stayed for one night but it was very nice. Employees were great and very helpful. The sites were large, roomy and level. Loved it and will stay again.
Drove here in the dark and the gate was closed at 7:00. No night checking. Don't bother
Only stayed one night on my way across Texas. Woke up to 28 degrees F and the bathhouse was warm enough to take a shower. Plenty of hot water. I dIdn t gIve 5 stars as the camphost site appeared cluttered and in disarray.
