Large campground

We have stayed here several times now. The only thing that we dislike is the gate being locked but it is also a good thing. We enjoy the lake activities. most of the sites our level and good. they bathhouses have always been in good shape. I wished the playground was more centrally located for the kids as we had to ride bikes or walk a long ways to get to it. there is always deer in the park. I think the Army Corps of Engineers does very well with their campgrounds. No firearms even for permit carriers is something else I'm not pleased with.

Very nice campground

We had a wonderful stay here, check in was easy and painless. Remember COE campgrounds lock the gates at 10PM-7AM but there is parking across the street of entrance if you visitors that will be leaving later.
We stayed in a travel trailer and had no problems getting in or out. The sites are well marked, paved, level and easy to back in (like ours) or pull thru.
Lots of boats, jetskis, kayaks on the lake this time of year and our site was about 15 ft above the lake with a great view.
There is a major rail line on the west side of the lake here.. We loved the train sounds and if you have your AC running you probably won't notice it.
$30 a night for premium sites (waterfront) Water and Electric (30 and 50 amp) only, no sewer. Dump station was easy to enter & exit near the entrance. Bathrooms and showers were clean and well maintained.
Sites have nice gravel spots for tents, concrete picnic tables and charcoal grills.
When you turn from Glade Rd onto Kings Camp Rd there are two gas stations and a Family Dollar with lots of camper related supplies at this intersection.
If it is open, try the fruit stand next to Family Dollar for some great local tomatoes and peaches.

One year we camped three times here. We love Mckinney. Quiet....clean and a fun place to relax. We always see deer when we come here. We've camped in a pop up and TT. Highly recommend this CG.

Nice campground. Lots of sites an well maintained. Gate locks at 10pm. Beach, playground, bathhouses good shape. We enjoy the lake activities as well as visiting redtop state park.

This is a beautiful campground, and very quiet at this time of year, but be aware that the gates are locked at 9 p.m. during the off season and they don't give you any code for access after hours. I have never stayed anywhere that didn't give campers a way to get in with the gates closed. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a lot to park in outside the gate but it is very cold right now and a very long walk to our site. Other than this, it's a nice park and relatively easy to get a long rig around.

Again it was wonderful. This time we stayed near the marina and it was much quieter(no wake zone in the marina so boats were throttled back)
Check in was quick and very pleasant. The camphosts were very friendly, helpful and a very nice couple from Mississippi. We will miss them next trip.
McKinney is still our goto place..
Sites are clean, level, well laid out and very nice.

Nature

As with most COE campgrounds, this place is all about being close to nature. It's not about cable TV, Wifi, club house, etc. The sites are big with a picnic table and fire pit. There are tons of trees...you're in the woods with deer, birds, squirrels and other wildlife. It's very large with lots of winding roads to several loops of campsites. The spots that are directly next to the lake cost a few dollars more but would be worth it if you want lake access because otherwise you have to walk through the woods or someone else's site to get to the water. There was a swim beach down the road from us. With a National Parks pass we got 1/2 off for a rate of $13 a night! It's a great deal. Like some have mentioned, the gate closed at 9pm with no after hours access. You can park near the gate and walk in but some sites are a long way from the gate!

Each site had nice space between the sites. Beautiful lake sites and plenty of nature to take in. Deer, turkeys, squirrels, bugs all around. Front desk Check in can be a long wait and they treated our 2nd sets of guests poorly at the gate. Bathrooms are clean. Showers functioned ok. You won’t get satellite in most sites because of the trees, but received most local OTA channels.

Nice COE Campground

I read several negative reviews about the campground hosts at Mckinney. I found them to be extremely courteous and accommodating. Be aware that this is a Corps of Engineers Campground, they have rules and you are expected to abide by those rules. The atmosphere was no different from the COE campgrounds near me that we visit on a frequent basis.

Beautiful campground

Only stayed 2 nights on our way up to Pigeon forge. Big campsites with fire pits. Great seperation between campsites. Nice clean bathhouses. Lake altoona is beautiful. Deer are cery friendly and not shy. Hope to stay here again

We really enjoy Mckinney and stay there whenever in the ATL area. Nice park, good sites and reasonably easy to maneuver. A little off the beaten trail and the road in will keep you focused. Make sure you plug the correct street address in. My Garmin has another McKinney north of the lake (which is incorrect). We used the senior pass and got the 50% off rate.
