This is "old Florida" camping. There are 3 camp areas, 2 of which are fairly wooded with dirt or sand. The sites are small & the restrooms are old but clean. The new area has beautiful bath houses, paved roads & gravel sites with natural growth between. The canopy walk & observation tower give you a birdseye view. Myakka is known for numerous gators & has 2 slow airboats to go see them. There is evidence of wild hogs but I've never seen them.
We stayed last July (yes it was hot). There are several loops in which to camp but only one with full hookups. This is a big park with lots of different hiking areas to choose from. They have a great gift shop with some necessities and lots of souvenirs. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. You will see lots of gators, birds, deer and other wildlife especially if you seek them out at dawn or dusk. There is a wonderful observation tower that gets you up above the canopy with even more opportunities to see birds.
We visited Myakka River State Park for a week, and we loved every day of it, despite lots of heat and rain during our late July stay. This park is huge and beautiful, with tons of wildlife. We were out walking at 5 in the morning and with our flashlight, we spotted several wild hogs in the brush! It s away from the hustle and bustle of Sarasota, but still a quick drive in when you need supplies or fast data signal. If you want hookups and nice new showers and laundry, stay in the Palmetto Ridge loop. We could definitely see ourselves coming back to visit this park again, perhaps when it s a bit cooler.
